Every corner of the classroom at Nutwood Forest Pre-Primary School is arranged to spark exploration, conversation and connection, reflecting a deep commitment to beauty, quality and children’s ability to manage things independently. This philosophy traces straight back to Maria Montessori herself, who understood that a carefully prepared environment is essential to healthy childhood development.
Montessori recognised that young children rely completely on their surroundings to make sense of the world, which is why she paid such close attention to how classrooms were arranged. She wanted rooms that felt happy and familiar, where children always knew where things belonged and didn’t need to lean on adults for every little thing. She was, in fact, the first educator to introduce child-sized furniture, giving children cupboards and shelves built to their own height, so the classroom felt like it truly belonged to them.
